The principles behind laser cutting sheet metal 

Laser cutting sheet metal is a thermal cutting method where a focused laser beam is applied with high energy density. The energy is absorbed by the material, leading to local melting or vaporization. Since the process is contact-free, mechanical wear and deformation are eliminated, enabling cuts with very tight tolerances. Fiber laser technology provides high efficiency, good beam quality and short cycle times.

Material-adapted laser cutting of sheet metal 

The choice of material has a direct impact on the cutting result. We work with process adaptation based on the optical and thermal properties of each material: 

Black plate (carbon steel): Absorbs laser energy efficiently and is well suited for fiber lasers. We handle black plate up to 25 mm, where high cutting speeds are combined with tight tolerances. The process is optimized for minimized post-processing and thermal impact.

Stainless steel: Requires controlled cutting gas to avoid oxidation. We use nitrogen gas when cutting to achieve bright, oxide-free cut surfaces that are suitable for welded and visible details.

Aluminum: With its high reflectivity and thermal conductivity, aluminum places high demands on stable laser operation and focus position adjustment. We adjust parameters such as pulse width, power and cutting speed depending on the alloy and thickness.

Prerequisites and data basis 

Efficient laser cutting of sheet metal requires clear technical specifications. For best results, drawings should be delivered in DWG or DXF format with specified tolerances and material data. If necessary, we offer technical advice to adapt designs to the characteristics of the laser process and thereby optimize both function and manufacturing cost.
